A portrait is a painting of a specific person - an artistic likeness. Painters also try to indicate the essence and personality of the person portrayed in portraits. Numerous well-known painters have dealt intensively with portraits, such as for example B. Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci or Albrecht Dürer.

Many portraits are associated with the memory of an individual person who appears worthy of being portrayed due to their social rank, personality or special deeds. Most of the time, the people portrayed immortalize themselves and the painting survives time - a kind of monument to the person.

Icons are images of saints, such as those often found in Byzantine-style Orthodox churches. They show holy people or events from the Bible or church history and are painted on wood using a special technique. Typically the depictions are two-dimensional and have a gilded background.

In the Orthodox faith, icons are said to have a special power because they mediate between the earthly and divine worlds. By viewing or venerating an icon, the presence of God can be experienced.

In history, a still life refers to the representation of motionless objects. This genre has been extremely popular with both artists and audiences for centuries. They show everyday objects that are arranged very aesthetically and virtuosically.

Many famous artists of the last 300 years have dealt with this subject, such as for example Pablo Picasso's 'Nature morte aux tulipes' (Still life with tulips), Paul Cézanne's 'Bouilloire et fruits' (Jug with fruits) or Vincent van Gogh's 'Vase avec marguerites et coquelicots' (Vase with cornflowers).
